Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll MP presented the awards on Thursday night, which showcase the best in Victorian design across categories including architectural, product and industrial, communications, digital and service design. The YMCA Playnasium, a collection of outdoor equipment that integrates children's play equipment with adults exercise equipment, has taken home the Design Award of the Year at the 2017 Victorian Premier's Design Awards.
The judging panel said, "The YMCA Planasium is an exemplary example of product design. The innovative idea of combining adult exercise with children's play equipment to create a unique design solution which is engaging and entertaining for a healthier community is the key reason the jury unanimously selected this project for the 2017 Victorian Premier's design award of the year."
Positive Partnerships Creating Social Impact
Bayly Group partnered up with the team at
McCann Worldgroup to bring to life this exciting product with positive social impact for
YMCA Victoria. The YMCA wants to build healthier communities by getting people together and getting active, and the Playnasium does that. Using the child to generate workout effort, and the parent’s workout effort to move the child’s ride, the Playnasium is the best of both worlds.
Three pieces of equipment were developed for Playnasium. The Pull-Upsy-Daisy combines pull down weights with a see-saw. Peck-A-Boo combines a pec-deck with a vertical swing and peek-a-boo. Row-Row-Row-Machine combines a rowing machine with a moving dolphin ride.
The Awards Night
Bayly Director, Mark Bayly and Design Engineer, Ryan Mischkulnig attended the award ceremony held at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
"We're honoured to get recognition but even more to have the opportunity to work on a project with such impact. And to not only design the product, but to see it through to the installation," said Mark Bayly
The YMCA Playnasium utilised the unique combination of skills on offer from Bayly Group in product design and development, as well as from McCann in innovative marketing, to produce a product that seamlessly blends exercise and playground equipment.
When asked about the design Mark said, "What we produced absolutely nailed the clients brief: a stand out design that would turn the McCann vision into a campaign that has helped tell the YMCA story to Australian families. It met the needs of McCann, YMCA and the families that form YMCA's clientele. We couldn't do it alone and send a big thank-you to our partners that helped pull everything together including the team at Williams Patterns who helped build the equipment."
